No harm in debating Lancashire ‘super authority’

It was particularly fitting that 14 Lancashire councils met on Thursday to discuss the possible benefits of coming together to create a “super authority”.

After all, it was Lancashire Day, the day the Red Rose county sticks out its chest with pride.

Supporters of a large, county-wide authority point to the promises made by central government on devolved powers, greater local control and knowledge.

Opponents will no doubt fear the loss of our town’s unique identities. Communities just a few miles apart still take great pride in their locality.

Whatever the outcome, there can be no harm in debating the issue.
