On Monday, Ejaz Hussain from Burnley Telematics came down to a series of meetings with businesses and also with the Minister Matthew Hancock to discuss apprenticeships and his idea of hosting business forums.

I am proud of the work he is doing to promote apprenticeships to hard to reach communities within Burnley and beyond.

I was on the Intellectual Property Bill Committee which meant a lot of my time was spent discussing this.

On Tuesday I spoke at a Skills Summit and was delighted to be able to talk about the importance of developing a sustainable skills system that allows people to become equipped with the right skills for the jobs of the future.

On Wednesday I was on a visit to Pimlico Plumbers depot in Kennington to meet the team and the managing director Charlie Mullins, who started up as a former apprentice and has now grown to a fantastic company that employs over 200 people. It was great to hear about their apprenticeships and all the work the company is doing in supporting London’s 126,000 young people back into work. I met with Danny Alexander to discuss the funding of possible future capital investment at Burnley General Hospital and the response was extremely positive.

On Friday I was delighted to go to the Holme tunnel at Cliviger which was an incredible experience. The conditions were difficult and the work is being carried out by ex coal miners. It is a £25m. project and I was delighted to hear it is one week ahead of schedule and on budget.

I then went to Todmorden. The installation of the curve, which is almost finished, needs connecting up at both ends to the main line and the signal system installed. I was delighted to hear it is all going to schedule.

Friday was busy with surgeries and Saturday’s M and S stall was as busy as always.

I met lots of people during our action day on Saturday who are really pleased with the progress that has been made in Burnley – more jobs and the opening of the Urgent Care Unit at Burnley General Hospital.
