Nelson horror smash: police appeal

Police are appealing for witnesses after a number of cars were involved in a collision in Nelson at the weekend – with one driver making off from the scene.

A man had to be airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following the accident which happened in Hibson Road at the junction with Percy Street.

It is believed that a white Mercedes C63 and a black Honda Civic R were travelling towards the junction when they were involved in a collision with a silver Volkswagen Touran and two parked cars, a Renault Megane and a BMW 335 saloon.

The four occupants of the Touran sustained whiplash injuries.

The four occupants of the Honda Civic sustained cuts and bruises and one of them remains in hospital with a small break to his back.

Enquiries are on-going to trace the driver of the Mercedes who made off from the scene.

PC Mark Newton of the Road Policing Unit said: “This was a major collision involving a number of vehicles and it is lucky that no one was more seriously injured. An investigation into how this collision occurred is underway and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to contact us as soon as possible.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen any of the vehicles involved driving prior to the collision and anyone with any information should contact us on 101.”
