A medical emergency during a class prompted the owners of a Burnley gym to come up with the idea to provide life saving equipment.

So Mark and Heather Turner, who run MT3 Gym in Harle Syke, set up a defibrillator fundraiser online and were inundated with support from the community, from gym members to local businesses.

Heather said: “We decided we really wanted to provide a defibrillator unit close to the gym, but for the whole of the local community in Harle Syke - so accessible even when the gym is closed.”

Along with many private donations, the fund was boosted by a variety of businesses including 142 Hair, Boss Cleaning, Briercliffe Surgery, The Commercial, Harle Cycles, LPK Facilities, Mustys Muttleys, Sanctuary Spa and Tuck in at Varleys.

This helped the couple to reach the target of £2,185 and the fund was boosted to £2,287 with various fund raising events including a DEKA fitness challenge competition and a charity night. The unit, which is a device that gives a high energy shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest, was installed on Talbot Street at the end of September.

Heather added: “ This was alll done within four months - an outstanding effort and we wish to offer our heartfelt gratitude to all involved.”
