Now, Emily Wall, of Just Keep Swimming Leisure Limited, wants to convert it to contain a swimming pool in which to teach youngsters.

She has applied to Burnley Council for approval for the change.

A supporting statement says: “I am planning to run a small private swim school.

“The premises is currently vacant and was previously Evolve Military College.

“The unit is situated in a small private gated business park set back off Athletic Street, Burnley, and offers ample parking spaces for the proposed business usage in order to avoid disruption to the local community.

“We believe that the unit is in a prime location for children to access swimming lessons as the unit is located within walking distance from major bus routes and in a well populated central area of the town.

“The unit is already fitted out with toilet and changing facilities as well as office space, therefore the interior and exterior of the unit will remain structurally the same throughout.

“To meet our business proposal we will be erecting an above ground 10metre by 5metre x 1.25metre removable swimming pool on the open floor space inside the unit.

“In addition, the swimming lessons we plan to provide will be for small groups of children.

“Our swimming instructors have gained a reputable name in the local area, the grant of planning permission will strengthen the position of the area as we currently have over 200 children on our waiting list who cannot swim, and sadly we haven’t the space in our current facility to accommodate them.

“We hope to offer swimming lessons to those who unfortunately haven’t been able to pass the 25metre national curriculum standard and those with physical or hidden disabilities that just need that extra support.”
