Sheeran tops currency chart

ED SHEERAN'S global appeal has been highlighted in new research that shows he has been paid in no fewer than 25 currencies since picking up the coveted best male solo artist award at last years Brit Awards.

Currency specialist International Currency Exchange (ICE) conducted research into what the 2015 winners have been up to since they took home the coveted trophies at last year’s ceremony.

Since winning best male solo artist in 2015, Ed Sheeran managed to spend and earn in 25 different currencies during his 2015 world tour, closely followed by One Direction who were paid in 16 currencies across America, Asia, Europe and Australasia.

However, currency collector Sheeran was beaten to the distance trophy by winner of last years critic’s choice award, James Bay.

Bay takes the top spot for number of miles travelled, racking up an impressive 126,748 miles during his 2015 tour, which works out at three album sales[1] for every one mile travelled.

Royal Blood, last year’s winner of the British group award, scoops second place for distance travelled, covering 105,915 miles during their 2015 tour. Hot on their heels in third place is Sam Smith, who covered 95,688 miles in 2015 after taking home the British breakthrough act award and global success award.

After breaking a leg and having to cancel a handful of gigs, the Foo Fighters pulled through to claim third place in the currency race and finished their tour 14 legal tenders later with an impressive 84,276 miles under their belt.

Koko Sarkari, COO at ICE plc, said: “Although we have focussed on the currencies earned, what this research actually shows is how popular British artists are the world over.

“The Brit Awards are the biggest celebration of this country’s contribution to global music and we are excited to play our part with our latest giveaway.”

This year’s nominees include Ellie Goulding, James Bay, Coldplay, Wolf Alice and Lana Del Rey, with attendees and viewers looking forward to enjoying performances from Adele and Justin Bieber among others.
