Gaming: MX v ATV: Supercross

As I have more than likely mentioned before, I love racing simulation games and being a fan of motorcycles I have always been on the lookout for that perfect bike simulator, Ok there has been a few over the years and one of my favourites MX V ATV fits right up there with my top ten sim games, so you can imagine how gutted I was when THQ went bankrupt!

No more MX v ATV and no more Darksiders!!

Well my sorrow is no more because Swedish games company Nordic games jumped in and bought the rights to both, and lo and behold we have the fifth instalment called MX v ATV: Supercross (no idea what’s happening with Darksiders though).

MX v ATV: Supercross stays true to the original franchise with 17 tracks and a full on 5 series career mode and with 80 Motocross companies and 40 different riders there’s a whole bucket load of content available.

    Visually this game isn`t going to win any awards, the graphics are pretty uninspiring but this is not a game that relies on its realism, it’s all about the racing and that works well.

    The career mode has five different classes and you can win upgrades for your bikes and rider which aren`t that spectacular. Each class doesn`t take long to complete and with varying levels of difficulty you can try them over and over again.

    MX v ATV: Supercross is just a racing game and Nordic haven`t really pushed it too far for their first crack at the franchise, controls are fine and you will find that it isn`t easy to get into as both the left and right analogue sticks are needed, stunts are allowed but really hard to pull off and to be honest there is no merit in doing them unless you want to keep falling off.

    There is a variety of tracks (17 to be exact) and they are all basically the same just variations on a theme. Now all this negative stuff aside the actual game itself is good fun and once you get the hang of it and soon becomes quiet addictive.

    There is of course a banging sound track to this game which I generally turn off after a while and the engine noises and cheers from the crowd give the game plenty of atmosphere.

    Options allow the player to select the right bike and set the difficulty and number of laps.

    There is a multiplayer mode as well for up to 12 players and a split screen for local play I would make sure you get up to speed first before tackling the on-line play as there are plenty of dedicated riders who will wipe the floor with you.

    Summary

    MX v ATV: Supercross is a basic racing game not the best out there but still fun to play, fair play to Nordic for giving it a go and keep the franchise going, apart from the gameplay the rest of the game is uninspiring with PS2 type graphics being the most obvious.
