Burnley and Padiham based drumming group Suco Samba celebrates 10th birthday with open air performance
The spectacle of 100 drummers, who came together to celebrate the 10th birthday of Burnley and Padiham based Suco Samba, was quite a sight to behold.
Drummers from across the North West came together for the event and, after a four hour workshop to learn three rhythms, they staged a performance on Padiham Plaza in front of the town hall. They were joined on the day by dancer Danny Henry.
The group was originally set up in 2016 by Adrian Whitehead to support people in recovery from addiction. At the time, the group was called 'Juice.’ It then changed to become 'Suco Samba,’ Suco meaning Juice in Brazilian portuguese, and the group was opened up to the wider community, as covid shone a light on people being socially isolated and wanting to find a way to connect with others.

Drumming in a group can relieve depression, reduce stress and anxiety and is a great way to meet new people. Suco Samba provides a safe space to learn new skills whilst improving mental and physical wellbeing. Members regularly perform in the local area, taking part in parades and community events.
Rehearsals are every Thursday from 7pm-9pm at Padiham Unitarian Church. If anyone would like to join they are asked to email [email protected] to find out about the next intake of players. All drumming equipment is provided and the first session is free, after which a suggested donation of £2 per session is suggested. All ages are welcome. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
You can find out more information about the group on its Facebook page.
