Summer basketball club to be staged in Burnley

During the third week in August, Burnley Basketball Club will provide their first Summer Basketball Club led by Sam Chambers, a local lad that plays for Durham Wildcats franchise in the BBL, the highest league of basketball in the UK.

Giulio Minozzi said: “I contacted Sam several months ago to see if he would run our first Summer Camp in Burnley.

“Sam, born in Burnley, is probably the best players so far that our town has produced, he plays in the BBL with Durham Wildcats and he might go and play in Europe next season.

“He has done remarkably well, I remember playing against him and his dad many years ago in the Hyndburn League, I think he was only 14 or 15.”

Burnley Basketball Club, following the AGM, has made a commitment to his members to give them the best possible opportunities to play basketball locally, and the Summer Camp will provide a unique opportunity to be coached by a player that actually plays at the highest level in the country and can share his knowledge to our players.

Also Burnley Basketball Club has created a second senior team.

Coach Michael Thompson, senior head coach, explained: “We decided to create a second team because last year we had 15-18 senior players training for the first team and most of them did not play enough minutes despite training twice a week really hard.

“Also in the last few months we have been approached from a number of new players that would like to join our club because of the ethos, professional set up and coaches ability at this club.

“This team will be linked with the first team, our Under 18s will be able to train and play with this team and make a easier transition to senior basketball if they want.”

Burnley also has forged a link with Manchester Giants, the newly BBL franchise in Manchester.

Club head coach Colum Cronin said: “In recent months one of our member has been working very closely with Manchester Giants to revive the BBL franchise and we took the opportunity to understand if Burnley could benefit with a link to one of the biggest name in basketball in the UK.”
