Stunning performance helps Burnley see off Ormskirk

In the first three scrums, Burnley showed their dominance, scoring two similar tries, the first from Jack Stockdale and the other by Luca Angelone, both converted by Sam Mounsey.

The home team changed their line out slightly, trying Chris Pickles throwing in, with captain Paul Mallaband jumping in the lineout.

As the game went on, this area developed nicely.

Next on the board was scrum half Austin Ralph – supporting his forward runners, he made a great break, bursting through the tackler, then beating the last player to score.

Unfortunately, Burnley then lost Ali Marjot to an injury, and he was replaced on the wing by Matt Crowley.

With Burnley dominating the half, some good passing out wide led to Crowley getting the ball, beating a player, then kicking through to score, and Mounsey added the kick to make it 22-0 at half-time.

The talk at the break was to continue the same approach, and work on making sure Ormskirk did not steal any Burnley ball, having suffered two turn overs in the first half.

In the second half, Ormskirk came out firing and probably had their best 10 minutes, but Burnley’s defence held firm.

With winger Lee Ferrier chasing really well, his tackle count for a winger was exceptional.

Unfortunately, an interception got Ormskirk back in the Burnley half, and their winger broke away to score, the kicker making the conversion .

The home side then got back on top, and, secure in knowing they had the bonus point, showed real promise for the future.

Mallaband then scored a try, quickly followed by another, after a quick penalty by Simon Finnan fed Adam Wallis, who drove over and scored.

Now Burnley were opening the opposition up, and distribution through the backs, linking with forwards was great to see.

From a turn over at the scrum by Burnley’s strong pack, Joe Parkinson got the ball, and over he went.

Then straight away from the kick-off, there were good runs by Jack Donovan and Stockdale, and more good support and passing, and Parkinson was over for his second.

The final try for Burnley came when Luca Angelone drove through and was supported by Jimmy White, who went under the posts .

Mounsey converted four out of the five second half tries as Burnley finished up 59-7 winners.

Tomorrow the seconds and thirds are away at Rochdale and Bolton respectively, both 3 p.m. kick-offs.
