Preparation is the key to success for Storks boss Smith

'Before anything else, preparation is key' was a phrase coined by Alexander Graham Bell, but it's a mantra adopted by joint Padiham Football Club boss Liam Smith.

The Ruby Civil Arena chief takes pride in the groundwork that he carries out on a daily basis in his bid to give the Storks the best chance of succeeding.

Alongside Dixon Lambert and Alex Norwood, the three musketeers can always be seen talking tactics, scouting players and doing their homework on upcoming opposition.

The trio have scoured the country in search of fixtures to watch in the Hallmark Security Premier Division when the opportunity arises and they never rest.

The latest expedition was to the Richborough Estates Stadium where Congleton Town, who are at the Arbories next month, hosted Northwich Victoria.

“We’re mad keen when it comes to preparation,” he said. “It’s part of our job so we’ll take a game in whenever we’re available.

“We’ve been entrusted with this role so it’s our responsibility to ensure that we’re well prepared. It’s part of our mantra and we’ll do it to the best of our ability.

“It could be the difference between winning, losing or drawing. It’s really important that we get out and see these teams first hand.”

He added: “We had the opportunity to go out and get a game in so we went to watch Congleton Town v Northwich Victoria.

“It was a rare opportunity to get out on a Saturday and watch a future opponent. It was a decent game and similar to many of our’s with a frantic last five minutes.

“It could’ve gone either way. It’s not very often we get the chance to go to places like that because of the distance.

“It was the first time that we’d watched them this season. Congleton were decent going forward but they’ve got weaknesses that we’ll be looking to exploit.”

After yet another postponement, the club’s 12th of the season, the Storks will be hopeful of getting a game in on Saturday as they entertain Squires Gate with kick off at 3 p.m.

“They’re on a great run,” said Smith. “Andy Clarkson has done a fantastic job. He’s getting the best out of his existing players and added some real quality to his squad.

“Scott Harris is prolific and one of the best players at this level. He’s a player that we really admire.

“Andy deserves massive credit for the job he’s done. We just want to win every game that we can to get some momentum going.

“Goals are one thing that you’re guaranteed to get with us. There’s always goals. I’ve probably jinxed it now and it’ll end up 0-0.

“We’re certainly entertaining and value for money. You’re guaranteed five-star entertainment.”
