Padiham lose out against high-flying Widnes

It was an afternoon to forget for joint Padiham boss Liam Smith against Widnes at the Select Security Stadium.

The Storks were on a three-game winning streak but they had their work cut out against their promotion-chasing opposition.

Michael Burke’s 16th minute opener for the hosts was just the start as Smith was sent to the stands just before the interval.

With the visitors in disarray, Stuart Cook doubled the lead within 60 seconds of the restart.

Padiham, though, responded immediately and were right back in the game when Danny Boyle netted.

But their task of salvaging anything from the fixture took a huge knock when Mark Ayres was given his marching orders.

The 10 men battled bravely but it was the home side who made their numerical advantage count when putting the game to bed in the 90th minute.

This time it was Sean Myler on the scoresheet for the hosts.
