Paul takes all at Captain's Day

There was a bumper turn out of 182 golfers for Club Captain Dave Johnson's Captain's Day Prize played at Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday.

The overall winner was Paul Nightingale with a score of 75-08-67, one shot better than Richard Fothergill who took the Division Two prize with his round of 83-15- 68. Mark Ashworth recorded the lowest gross score of 68.

Other prizes presented by the Captain during the evening prize presentation ceremony in the clubhouse were:- Matthew Nettleton (nearest pin at the fifth), Ken Mantle (nearest the pin at the 17 th), Mark Jones (longest drive) and Andrew Drive (nearest the pin in three at the 18 th).

The Lancashire amateur champion Mark Ashworth added yet another title to his long list of successes this season by winning the Harold Ryden Trophy at Nelson Golf Club last week.

The Clitheroe Golf Club champion faced Nelson’s Curtis Clarkin in the final and ran out the winner by 3&1. This was Ashworth’s fifth appearance in the final of the Harold Ryden and his fourth win.

Fellow Clitheroe member Tony Flanagan won the prize for the best net score over the two qualifying rounds with his score of 145-8-137.

The men’s senior team enjoyed an emphatic win in their Ribble Valley Seniors’ League match against St Annes Old Golf Club with five out of the six pairs recording successes to notch up a 10-2 winning margin.

On Sunday a Three Ball Scramble was won by the team of Damian Durrant, Peter Pedder and Ralph Postlethwaite with a score of 48 points, one better than the runner-up team of Nigel Clowes, Alf England and Kieron Hunt.

Mary Singleton held her nerve with a par 5 at the 18th hole to edge out runner-up Jean Alcock whose double bogey 7 at the same hole proved a costly error in the Lady Captain’s Prize competition last Thursday.

Both players recorded net 72s but Mary was declared the winner on a card play-off. A card play-off was also needed to decide third place with Caroline Cherry (90-17-73) getting the verdict over Elizabeth Birtwell (103-30-73). Tracey Bentley took the Best Gross prize with her round of 82. A nine hole Stableford competition was won by Gael Smith with 20 points.

Clitheroe member Mark Ashton and fellow golfers Alan Smith, Pete Fletcher and Kevin Moore have raised £2,000 for the Macmillan cancer support charity by playing 72 holes of golf in their Longest Day Golf Challenge over the Clitheroe course. The team started at 6 a.m. and completed their marathon four rounds at 9-10 p.m.
