This week a team of 14 nurses went to the mill to see the location – and they had come all the way from Brisbane in Australia!

The largest section of Northlight is being created by Evermore, who provide caring facilities for the elderly. Nelson firm Barnfield Construction will do the work.

And the firm invited the Australian members of Nurses in Management – Aged Care to include Brierfield in their trip around the North of England to find out about care for older people. They were shown round the mill by Evermore’s chief executive officer Sara McKee, and Barnfield projects director Gareth Smith.

Sara made it clear their work will start in the new year and will include 66 facilities. “We think they’ve got a lovely view,” she said. “I’ve always loved this area. I’ve been working on this project for two and a half years.”

The nurses had been to see a care home in Wigan before moving on the Brierfield. And they were then going to Leeds and Penrith to find out more about care conditions of older people.

When they were shown round the Evermore location in, Mr Smith explained plans for the mill, including not just the residential facilities but a hotel, sports facilities, a family pub, a canal marina and office facilities. Work will start in March and carry on for around two years.

And Sara explained that residents in the appartments would have doctors and nurses looking after them.
