In January 2005, the Clarets earned a home tie with Rafa Benitez's Reds, with Sinclair captain in his first season with the club.

It was a season where Liverpool would finish as European champions for a fifth time, after a remarkable comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul.

However, only six of the 18 on duty that night, were in the Liverpool squad at Turf Moor, and Benitez chose against an insurance policy on the bench, with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Dietmar Hamann, Djibril Cisse, Luis Garcia and Harry Kewell left at home.

Sinclair's eyes lit up in the referee's room at Turf Moor when he saw those names missing, and instantly went to the home dressing room to deliver the good news!

As it was, Djimi Traore's comedic own goal ensured Championship Burnley claimed a famous scalp.

For Burnley, it was the second Premier League side they had beaten that season, having already seen off Aston Villa in the League Cup.

And Sinclair said: "Obviously it was always going to be tough to compete at the top end of the league, realistically, with the budget the manager had, if you saw the amount of money other teams were spending.

"But we had a fair enough respect from teams, we were very much the image of the manager, hard working, no airs and graces, we worked for each other and got good results off the back of that.

"The Liverpool game was a massive upset.

"I just got a good feeling, as soon as I read their team sheet.

"They didn't disrespect us, but they left a few players out that I thought would be crucial to them getting something out of the game.

"Whether they underestimated us or not, I'm not sure, but I really fancied us after seeing the team sheet.

"As captain, I saw it very early, going in with the referee to do your normal duties before the game, and I was very surprised by it.

"I remember going back into the changing room and saying to the manager and the players 'boys. have a look at the team, we've got a real chance here!'

"I think everybody took that on board and when we did go out, we were focused and very serious about the opportunity we had to turn over a massive club."
