Golfers prove to be a big hit for charity

Last year, Burnley Golf Club chose Winston’s Wish as their charity of the year as the club’s men’s captain, Lee Corns, and ladies captain, Maureen Barson, were keen to choose a charity that supported children and families in the local area.

A multitude of fund-raising activities took place during the year.

Maureen held a Ladies’ Luncheon while Lee chose to take on a mammoth personal challenge in support of the charity, running 60 miles in just two days in October.

Other events included the Captain’s Golf Day and a Race Night which took the total to £5,200 for Winston’s Wish.

Winston’s Wish helps children and young people rebuild their lives after the death of a loved one, enabling them to face the future with confidence and hope.

Men’s captain Lee Corns said: “Maureen and I couldn’t have picked a more deserving charity in our year of office.

“We are so thankful to all the members and friends of Burnley Golf Club who have helped make the year’s fund-raising such an enjoyable experience.”

Clare Richards, North-West Community Fundraiser at Winston’s Wish, added: “This support came just at the right time when we were setting up our East Lancashire Drop-in based at Burnley Children’s Centre on Brunswick Street.

“It has enabled us to reach more children and their families and also raise awareness of the services which are now available following the loss of a parent or sibling.”
