Forrest knocks down the competition at Clitheroe Golf Club

Out in 32 with four birdies and a remarkable nett 66, Forrest was too hot for the other 120 competitors Barry Thomas finished runner up with his 67.

Ron Higson was the surprise package in Division Two as he played the last three in one under to finish top after a play-off with Dieno George with 68s

Denis Greenup produced a Federer type performance to win the Sir Michael Bonallack Open Singles Trophy. A level back nine and Greenup took the Best Gross Prize with a 73.

Michelle Fieldings’ dad, Norman, birdied the long S.I. one 7th and survived a nervous finish to take the best nett prize with his 72.

David Heesom won the Younger Seniors Category with two birds in his 73 and Jeff Crowther had a good day to win the 65-69 slot.

Terry Bithell didn’t expect much as the wheels came off a few times in his round but he battled on to win the best nett in the more mature Seniors Section. Matthew Nettleton,Tim Clarke and Mike Ranson top the list of 16 qualifiers for the Castle Cup Final.

For the girls, Sophie Lamb took the nett aggregate prize with a 5 below par score of 143 at The Pleasington Putter Competition Day and teamed up with Elizabeth Stebbings to win the Team Trophy for Westholme School at the Lancashire Schools Event.

On the home front young Lamb posted 71-3-68 at Clitheroe last week to win the Jane Panter Shield and Past Captains Salver and to cap off a marvellous week she is now under 18s County Champion after returns of 74 and 72 gross at Formby Ladies Course.

• MYTTON Fold Golf Club made the most of the fine weather on Saturday to reschedule its Queen’s Jubilee and family barbecue event.

It was down to Chris Chadwick, playing off 6, to head the leaderboard with an excellent 39 points on a still-moist course. Just one point behind were Keith Gill and Handicap Chairman Peter Main. A card play-off dictated that Keith took the runner-up slot.

In the ladies’ section it was yet another win for Tarja Wilson with 34 points, some two ahead of Pauline White and four ahead of Allison Nuttall in third spot.

• CAPTAIN’S Day is always a highlight of the season at Stonyhurst Park Golf Club

Nigel Smith returned 89-22-67 to win Tony Lee’s Captain’s Day prize, with last year’s winner, competitions secretary Jim Walker in second place on 87-18-69. Steve Bufton took third place with 87-17-70 and Stephen Young had the best gross score of the day with 77.

Young also had the longest drive, nearest the pin and, joined by Steve Bufton picked up the 2s golf ball prize. 4 single putts in the first 4 holes gave Bob Driver a score of 16 and first place in the 10 hole putting competition and Jason Excel’s fluorescent lime green shirt won him the prize for sartorial elegance. The evening’s dinner at the Foxfields Hotel was well attended

Despite the continuing economic gloom the Stonyhurst Park Golf Club Charity weekend raised a record amount of money this year.

It has once again been able to support three local charities, each receiving a cheque for £2,000. These were Crossroads Care, Bowland & Pennine Mountain Rescue Team and Mawdesley Equine and People’s Trust.

The Charity Weekend started on May 11th with a Corporate Golf Day organised by its members. The event has now been running for more than 11 years and has raised more than £80,000, averaging £6,000 per year which is distributed to three local charities, each of which receives sponsorship for three years.

A special mention must be given to Home Gas Supplies, Blackburn, who recruited so many teams for the Corporate Day. With raffle takings from club members at an all time high and additional money raised during the auction at the presentation evening held at the Shireburn Hotel, Hurst Green, the total raised was boosted to its record high amount.

The winning team on Corporate Day was Weltonhurst, with City Plumbing second and SPGC Club Team third. Also during the presentation evening the club chairman Mr Alan Talbot presented the winners of that weekend’s Club Competitions. The men’s Chairman’s Chalice was won by Andrew Driver and the ladies Rosebowl was won by Joyce Kenyon.

• THE ladies at Whalley Golf Club held their July Open team event on Thursday. The morning players got off to a good start and certainly had the best of the weather as conditions deteriorated later in the day.

The winning team, with an excellent score of 101, was Margaret Calvert (Whalley), Bev Dodd (Rossendale), Val Robinson and Katherine Barratt (Accrington). In second place with 85 was Karen Stanworth (Clitheroe), Lynne Cahill, Karen Cuthbert and Ethel Dawson (Prestwich). Following closely in third place with 84 was Jan Burrows (Clitheroe), Joan Whittaker, Sarah Clemson and Julie Stephenson (Whalley).

• THIS week saw members of Whalley Golf Club compete in the second round of the Arthur Longworth Trophy, a board competition played over two weeks to really test the consistency and ability of the members. The conditions for once were wet but playable and were certainly to the liking of Whalley’s low man Andrew Wray.

Wray, who is current incumbent of the prestigious trophy did not disappoint as he backed up him impressive 71-1-70 last week with an even better 70-1-69, giving a superb five under total to retain the title and have his name etched once more on the hallowed boards.

Dave Wetton almost pipped Wray on the day carding a delightful 81-12-69 and only missing out via a count back, John Blackadder came third with a lovely 85-15-70. There were four recorded two’s, Kevin Walker (twice), John Kitchen, and Howard Walmsley.
