A talented young wrestler who has made a momentous journey from Budapest to Burnley is getting to grips with life in his new home.

David Siko (11) arrived in Burnley from the Hungarian capital just six months ago with his parents Zoltan and Szomba who wanted to make a better life for themselves and their son.

And David, who was Hungary’s champion wrestler in his age group, has wasted no time in showing off his skills to his new classmates at Springfield Primary School, Burnley Wood.

Indeed, he has transferred his talent from Eastern Europe to East Lancashire, and secured the British title in a recent wrestling competition.

“I was the Under 12 champion in Hungary and I have now won a gold medal competing for my new club, Sharples Wrestling in Bolton.

“I miss my friends in Hungary but my English is already a lot better and everyone at Springfield is really nice.”

David, who enjoys maths and PE at school, said his dream is to become a doctor or a sports coach when he is older.

he has certainly made a good impression on his Year 6 teacher Miss Keziah Morley who said he has settled well in his new surroundings.

She said: “David is a very bright and nice little boy. He is very kind and his English is excellent.

“He is Springfield’s first Hungarian pupil and we are very proud to have him here. We now plan to do more wrestling in our PE lessons, which I’m sure David will help with!”
