‘Worthy winners’ - Burnley boss Dyche

The Clarets have seven points for their first three league games, and have also progressed to the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Only leaders Nottingham Forest, with a 100% league record, have more points, and Dyche said: “It’s a good start, and that’s all it is three games in, with a nice cup win.

“There’s plenty of challenges to come and we’re certainly not getting carried away.

“We’re enjoying it, but we all know how difficult the Championship is and how difficult it is to sustain wins.

“But the lads deserve it, they’ve been tremendous in pre-season and we’ve taken it into the season.”

Burnley won with two goals in five minutes, after taking the lead 16 minutes from time - a turnaround inspired by substitutes Keith Treacy and Scott Arfield.

Dyche admitted his side we below par in the first half, but ultimately deserved the three points: “Conditions were interesting, it was awkward. The lads were saying at half-time the ball was swirling and hard to deal with at times, whether they were excusing what was not a good first half by us...I’ll certainly excuse them because they have been terrific ever since we got back for pre-season.

“It was a quiet half by our standards, but after that, I thought we delivered a much better second half.

“Arguably the biggest change was the substitutes because I thought they were terrific and gave it a completely different feel.

“We got back on the front foot and overall ran out worthy winners.”

He added: “The first goal settles the whole stadium down, Yeovil had freedom to play - they can go anywhere in the division this year, relax, enjoy it and work hard for a win because the expectation is low on them, and that’s not being disrespectful, it just is with the nature of their first year in the division.

“The club have done fantastically well to be where they are.

“But at our club, there is an expectation, and we like that in a way, but it’s not easy.

“Yeovil came here with a game plan, they came motivated to win a game, and they calmed the first half down in their favour and it never really got going.

“We were slightly brighter in the second half, and by the end Vokesy had one cleared off the line, Ingsy hit the post and I felt we were very worthy in the end.

“I thought Yeovil did a really good job and changed the feel of the game, they made it uncomfortable for us.

“We had to deal with that. A few teams came here last year and camped in, and I don’t think Yeovil did that, but they definitely took the sting out of the game, and we got sucked into that.

“We reminded the players at half-time of the good things that we’ve been doing, and slowly but surely we delivered.

“We mentioned many times last year, you have to try and find a way to win, it can’t always be beautiful, you have to dig in. Sometimes it’s energy, sometimes it’s luck, sometimes it’s good play - good tactical organisation and good play.

“In the first half we did well to stay in the game with a good shape and energy, second half we got back to what we were and gave a good performance.”

The first goal had a stroke of luck, as Treacy’s cross-shot beat debutant keeper Sam Johnstone at his near post, and Dyche smiled: “I’m not bothered if he meant it or not, it was a hell of a strike. I don’t know whether it caught the keeper out or what, but it was a tough ball to deal with.

“But we’ll take it.

“After that the game settled, we played some really good stuff and opened them up a few times.”
