The Clarets, looking to cement their place alongside Hull City at the top of the Championship, started brightly and Scott Arfield was the first to test the water with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez equal to the midfielder’s 25-yard drive.

The on-loan Gunners stopper came out on top again moments later when thwarting the prolific Andre Gray after Burnley’s record signing turned Wolves skipper Danny Batth from George Boyd’s incisive flick.

After James Henry’s troublesome cross dipped beyond the far upright at the opposite end, Martinez denied the away side’s £6m man again as he turned to fire on target from Sam Vokes’s headed assist from a Ben Mee throw.

But Wolves soon got in to their stride and started to take command of the fixture midway through the first half.

Batthe’s lofted pass saw Benik Afobe breach the visitor’s rearguard, racing goal side of defender Michael Keane, and the striker forced Tom Heaton to palm over his bar from an uncompromising angle.

England international Heaton, called up to Roy Hodgson’s squad for the fourth time in succession, was then well positioned to claim Henry’s free kick after Joey Barton bundled Sheyi Ojo over on the angle of the penalty area.

Henry then curled an effort around the post from 20 yards after his dangerous cross was recycled back to him in the final action of the half.

Sean Dyche’s side had to portray their renowned resilience and organisation after the interval to keep the hosts out.

Wolves probed and applied the pressure in search of maximum points with Ojo kicking things off in the second half as he blazed over with a left-footed strike.

Boyd pulled an effort harmlessly wide of the upright as the ball broke to him but, aside from substitute Matty Taylor’s defelcted free kick which found the gloves of substitute goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, the visitors failed to threaten again.

Afobe’s shot from the edge of the box whistled wide of the woodwork after former Claret Kevin McDonald was crowded out from Henry’s assist inside the box.

The 22-year-old, already with seven goals to his name this term, then glanced wide from Henry’s delivery, though Heaton was never troubled.

Dave Edwards fired wide of the target on the turn from the edge of the box as Afobe turned provider, though it was Henry that went closest to finding the breakthrough when the winger’s beautifully bending effort was a whisker away from finding the bottom corner.
