Coyle would replace Roberto Martinez who left to manage Everton. Coyle has had a love-hate relationship with Burnley fans since he left the club, along with his entire backroom staff, to join Bolton during Burnley’s one season in the Premier League.

He was given a hostile welcome to Turf Moor on the opening day of last season and can expect an equally-vocal reception with his new club.

Coyle led the Clarets to the Premier League promised land thanks to a Championship play-off victory over Sheffield United at Wembley and enjoyed months of adulation before jumping ship.

His appointment would be bound to prompt a rush of reaction from Burnley fans.
