‘We edged the game’ - Sean Dyche

He felt Burnley edged the goal-less draw, which lifted his side back above QPR into 18th in the Premier League, and was delighted with his players’ application against a Spurs team with four members of the England squad on duty last week involved.

That included Harry Kane, who was kept on the periphery as Burnley registered a second clean sheet in three games, and eighth of the season.

Dyche said: “I think we edged the game, I don’t think there was much in it. It was a funny kind of game, I think the weather played its part, it’s hard when it turns from being freezing cold and suddenly the sun shines.

“But I thought we progressed through that, we kept the tempo high, the pressing high, and I was really pleased with the lads’ performance.

“I think we edged it overall, but certainly were deserving of a point.

“The framework of the team was very good, the will to press - we want to play on the front foot and be progressive, upset teams in order to win, so the endeavour has to be there.

“It can’t just be quality, it has to be will and demand, and I thought that was evident.

“Our fans respond to that, they see a group of people giving everything to be in the Premier League, and I think it’s an invaluable quality, one we’ve got in abundance.”

Danny Ings had the best chance of the game, bursting through after George Boyd robbed Nabil Bentaleb, but his shot was straight at Michel Vorm.

Dyche noted: “Danny had a great chance - it was unlike him not to put that one away, he’s almost hit it too clean, they are the ones you almost want to drag a little bit or misshape it almost into the corner.

“Then he made the keeper work for another one, and Boydy had a chance at the end, but I was pleased with another clean sheet against a side who, you look at the amount they’ve spent, they have the talent to be progressive themselves.

“We kept them to minimal chances of note, so I was pleased with the framework of the side and the energy, and moments of quality.

“You sometimes just need that scratch of luck or something to fall for you, and you win a match.”

He reserved praise for Ashley Barnes, used again from the left: “I thought Barnesy was excellent, I don’t normally mention individuals, but he was excellent.

“There were a lot of good performances, these are hard games, against high-quality opposition.

“I think they had four players in the England side. They are a good side and have spent a couple of hundred million quid on their players, so we’re not just competing, we’re earning the right, and we want to continue to do that to be in the Premier League.”
