Vokes on the brink of history with Wales!

The former Santos striker, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, netted the winner in the 66th minute at Nya Ullevi, Gothenburg, to knock Jimmy Murphy’s men out at the quarter-final stage of the tournament in Sweden.

It’s been a long wait but the nation could finally have something to celebrate again - and Clarets striker Sam Vokes will be in the thick of it.

Chris Coleman’s side require just two points from their forthcoming Group B UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Zenica tomorrow and against Andorra at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old missed half of the campaign when rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament for the Clarets in a Championship game against Leicester City at Turf Moor last year.

But he’s back in the fold, helping the Welsh take 10 points from a possible 12 to put them on the brink of history.

“It would be nice to start,” said Vokes, who has Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale and Reading’s Hal Robson-Kanu to contend with. “There’s a team there that have played since before my injury so it’s a team that has formed a relationship. Just to be a part of that is a great environment at the minute.

“It was a long time ago and it’s great to be part of a squad that’s pushing for that. It’s close. It could be something special. It’s been talked about a lot.

“You’re training with a different group and learning to play a different way with world class players so it’s good to be involved there.”

Vokes added: “If we can seal it this week it would be phenomenal. To be a part of something like that, we’ll obviously make history.

“They are exciting times. it would be nice to wrap it up in the next week.”

Vokes was also delighted to see former strike partner Danny Ings earn his first call up to Roy Hodgson’s senior England squad.

The pair formed a close bond when notching 47 goals between them as the Clarets secured promotion to the Premier League in the 2013/14 term.

“He’s obviously buzzing and it’s great news for him to be involved in that,” said Vokes.

“Scoring goals at Liverpool gets you that and he fully deserves it. We all saw how good he can be and stepping up to that next level will only bring more quality out of him.

“It would be nice to see him get a run-out for England.”
