The nation’s backers would’ve been glued to the pixelated screen back in 1958 as Jimmy Murphy’s side progressed to the quarter-final stage of the World Cup in Sweden.

It was there, in Gothenburg, that a certain Pele scored the solitary goal of the game as Brazil went on to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy.

But, more than half-a-century on, Clarets joint leading scorer Sam Vokes and his Welsh team-mates will appear in colour after progressing to the finals of Euro 2016 in France.

The 25-year-old, who has netted three times for Burnley in the Championship this term, featured for a quarter-of-an-hour of Wales’s penultimate qualifying fixture.

Vokes replaced Joe Ledley after Milan Djuric gave Bosnia-Herzegovina the lead at the Bilino Polje.

And despite Vedad Ibisevic extending the advantage in the 90th minute, Chris Coleman’s men were able to celebrate after Israel suffered a shock defeat to Cyprus in Group B.

The result ensured that the Dragons, captained by Swansea City’s Ashley Williams, couldn’t be caught regardless of the outcome of their final game against Andorra at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight.

Elsewhere, Stephen Ward will be hoping to be fit in time for the Republic of Ireland’s play-off.

The defender sustained an injury in the victory over World champions Germany on Thursday at the Aviva Stadium.

Ward, who was sidelined for Sunday’s defeat to Poland, was replaced by David Meyler in the 69th minute - just seconds before Shane Long scored the winner.

And finally, Burnley-born Reading midfielder Oliver Norwood helped Northern Ireland qualify for a first major tournament in three decades.

The Royal provided the assist for Josh Magennis to score on his international debut in the 3-1 triumph over Greece.

Norwood also played in the 1-1 draw against Finland.
