Trippier insists the Clarets still believe

Sean Dyche’s side have now gone 10 games without a win in the Premier League following a 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates and are now heavy favourites to face the drop with bookmakers.

However, Trippier recalled that the Clarets beat the odds to seal promotion from the Championship last term and they’ll feed from that same belief in their bid to avoid relegation.

“We’re still positive and we still believe,” he said. “That belief is strong in our camp and we showed that last year. It’s no different this season. We knew it’d be tough coming in to the Premier League but I think we’ve coped with it well. The win is just around the corner.”

Summer signing Alexis Sanchez was imperious for the Gunners as his second half double inspired the hosts to victory. The £30m Chilean, who scored twice for his nation at the World Cup in Brazil, ghosted between Michael Duff and Trippier to head the opener in the 70th minute and added the home side’s third in stoppage time after Calum Chambers had netted his first career goal.

Arsene Wenger was even afforded the luxury of bringing Aaron Ramsey, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott off the bench. “We knew it was going to be difficult and you can see that with the quality of the players, even the ones that they bring off the bench,” Trippier said. “In the first half we defended well, kept tight, stayed strong as a unit and we made it hard for them.

“Our game plan was to keep a tight unit, stay together, which we did, and then we countered them. We’re disappointed with the goals we gave away in the second half but we’ve got to take the positives out of the game today.

“Every game has been difficult up to now and you only have to look at the quality of Arsenal’s players to see how difficult it can be.”

The Clarets now face a cluster of clubs in the lower echelons of the division. Home games against Hull City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are on the horizon while away fixtures against Stoke City and QPR are among that sequence.

Trippier remains confident that their first win of the campaign isn’t far away: “We’ll review the performance, take the positives from the game, and kick on now for Saturday.

“You can’t start picking games to get three points. Every game is difficult but we’re all fully confident that the win isn’t far away.”
