TALKING POINTS: Leicester City 4, Burnley 2

Here are the talking points after Burnley opened their Premier League campaign with a 4-2 defeat at Leicester City.

BREAKING POINT

Burnley's squad is at breaking point, as again emphasised at the King Power Stadium.

Most Premier League sides would be badly affected by the loss of their first choice centre backs, never mind the spine of their side.

Throw in another injury worry, and, somehow, Sean Dyche finds himself in a position where, after the first league game of the season, he is crying out for reinforcements.

Surely Dyche has done enough to merit, not a helping hand, but the basic requirement of any manager at Premier League level, to have the resources to not just put a squad together, but build and improve his pool of players?

It was negligence to allow Dyche and his players to solider on for the last nine games of last season after the restart.

To have allowed the situation to fester still, is, frankly, scandalous.

The manager deserves better, the players deserve better, and the fans wondering quite what is going on, also deserve better.

I wrote back in June that, when that day comes, to lose Dyche, after what he has achieved, will be a sad one. Should be depart as a result of a self-inflicted wound, that would be unfathomable.

So I ask, again, please Mr Chairman, with two weeks and two games remaining before the transfer window closes, give this remarkable motivator and organiser of men the basic tools to continue the quite brilliant job he continues to perform.

On the website of Michael Bailey Associates, of which Mike Garlick is Founder and CEO, under the What We Do tab, it says: “We specialise in crafting intelligent bespoke, project-based recruitment solutions. Designed according to each client’s individual circumstances and requirements, our specialist recruitment consultants deliver a mix of contract recruitment, permanent recruitment, executive search, managed services and multi-hire projects."

Well, right now, Dyche needs an intelligent, bespoke recruitment solution - maybe he should get in touch?

MENTALITY

Again, it was hardly something we learned, but this group of players again showed they will run through a brick wall for the manager.

They must be wondering what on earth is going on, as regards new faces - where is the cavalry?

The players, as Dyche often alludes, need that injection of fresh blood to help them, and push them in equal measure.

As it stands, the team picks itself, and I begin to wonder whether if I can find the Copa Mundials in the garage, whether I might get a game at Millwall...

But you can't knock the players' mentality. There was no feeling sorry for themselves at Leicester, they attacked the game head on, scored a fine opening goal, and even when they suffered the blow of a cruel deflection to fall behind, before conceding a third, they kept coming.

They pulled one back, and looked capable of an equaliser, and still didn't lie down when Leicester went 4-2 up.

Relentless is a word often used by Dyche, and that remains the case with these players.

LUCK

You can't buy luck. Which is probably why Burnley have had a run of bad fortune since their first game of the new campaign on Thursday night,

A sickening twist of Johann Berg Gudmundsson's knee, from the shuddering impact of Jack Robinson's high, fully-extended left leg, meant the luckless Iceland international is facing another spell on the sidelines.

It might not be as bad as first feared, but, regardless, was the last thing he and Burnley needed.

Then Robbie Brady suffers another bang to the ribs to force him off at Leicester.

Then Timothy Castagne's cross deflects in off Erik Pieters to put the Foxes 2-1 ahead, before Chris Wood strikes the inside of the post, as Burnley looked to bring Leicester back into range at 4-2.

Everything seems to be going against Burnley at the moment, but it is about controlling the controllables, and maybe their luck will change if the chairman can add to Dyche's hand with a couple of new recruits.

DEBUT

Burnley may have conceded four goals at Leicester, and, without Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, that defensive solidity was missing.

But Jimmy Dunne could be pleased with his Premier League debut.

Forced in at the deep end against last season's Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy, the 22-year-old certainly didn't look of his depth.

He competed admirably, keeping Vardy relatively quiet, while he was a threat at every Burnley set play, winning header after header in the Leicester box.

So much so, it was no surprise when he nodded in to pull the score back to 3-2.

As Dyche said afterwards: “Really pleased for him, he’s a youngish player who’s been out on loan a couple of times, back in our fold, he gets a chance and scores a really good goal.

“I thought he did fine. He’s probably scratching his head a little bit that we conceded four goals because he certainly didn’t do anything wrong.

“A good night for him personally, that’s for sure."

WOOD

When Chris Wood held off James Justin and volleyed in the opening goal, it was the fourth-successive Premier League game in which he had found the net, having scored in the last three games of last season.

Wood has hit double figures in each of the last three Premier League seasons, and you wouldn't back against him doing the same again.

He got one, and could have had a hat-trick at his former club, squandering a golden chance in the second half, before hitting the post late on.

The New Zealand international had a couple more half-chances on the night, as he showed he hasn't lost his appetite for goals over the shortened break.
