Steven Thompson set to sign for boyhood club St Mirren

STORIES north of the border suggesting released Burnley striker Steven Thompson has agreed to join SPL club St Mirren are premature.

But it appears increasingly likely that he will return to Scotland to play for the Buddies - his boyhood club.

Real Radio claimed earlier this week that Paisley-born Thompson - who interested St Mirren manager Danny Lennon in January - had agreed to join Saints.

But the 32-year-old is on holiday and yet to agree his next destination, with Hibernian also reported to be keen to land the former Scotland international.

Lennon said back in January: “He’s certainly on the shopping list and I’ve made the proper inquiries but I think it’s going to be outside our grasp.

“If we don’t get him this time, let’s see what happens in the summer.”

Now he is out of contract, Thompson is a more viable financial proposition for St Mirren.

Kevin McDonald is another player attracting interest back home in Scotland, although I understand he also has potential suitors in England.
