Sean mural could be saved

The Calico Group has revealed it will try to remove the delicate artwork in tiles, and then give them to young Burnley fans.

In the build-up to Burnley Football Club’s latest Premier League season, the popular mural of the manager was painted by graffiti artist Paul Jones on the side of an outbuilding of the former Mitre pub in Westgate.

The artwork proved a hit with fans and has since been seen by millions around the world on television.

However, the Burnley Express revealed in October that the mural could be demolished as part of plans to create a new Calico homeless centre.

A Calico spokesman said: “The building is unsafe and currently in need of redevelopment. Calico has recently received planning permission for a new, wellbeing project to be built on this location.

“Calico will attempt to preserve a piece of this local history, giving junior Clarets fans the chance to be able to keep a memento of this historic Premier League season forever.”

Calico has said it will announce further details on the scheme in the near future.

The new facility, to be built on Mitre Street, will provide more modern accommodation than the Elizabeth Street Project, Calico’s existing homeless facility.

Work on the development will be completed by late 2017, and services will continue at the existing site in the meantime.
