The 25-year-old, who scored 22 goals in all competitions last term, netted alongside Marvin Sordell as the Welsh international completed 45 minutes of the fixture against Carlisle United at Gawthorpe.

Vokes has been sidelined since the end of March after rupturing his anterior cruciate knee ligament in the Championship clash against Leicester City at Turf Moor.

Speaking to Burnley Football Club’s official website, manager Sean Dyche said: “It’s his first real step on the way back and he’s been training with us and growing in confidence as well as feeling good.

“The next stage of that was obviously playing in a reserve game and he’s done that today and got 45 minutes under his belt.

“It’s another positive step for him but we won’t rush him back as we want him to come back fit once – fully ready.”

The Clarets starting XI in the 2-0 triumph over the Cumbrians was: Gilks; Reid, Long, Mee, Lafferty; Hewitt, Chalobah, Howieson, Wallace; Sordell, Vokes.
