Sam Vokes receives the all clear

Vokes netted both goals in a 2-1 win at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium in a behind-closed-doors outing.

But he was forced off on the hour after receiving a knock to his foot.

The Wales international had a scan after allowing the problem to settle down, and that showed up that the problem was nothing serious, and he will be available to boss Sean Dyche for Tuesday night’s visit of Middlesbrough.

Vokes has been on the bench for the last two games after the return of Charlie Austin, but the 23-year-old hopes his performance against Premier League opposition - on the back of his international strike against Austria last Wednesday - could put him in the frame for a recall.

The former Wolves man said: “It was good to get a game under our belts for a lot of the lads who haven’t been involved though, and to come here against a strong Premier League side almost and to come away with a win was good.

“It was good to get the goals early doors.

“It gave us a foothold in the game and personally it was nice to get on the scoresheet again.

“The big objective was to get some minutes under my belt and it was good to pop up with the two goals.

“You have to keep asking the question.”

Vokes has some exta time to get over the injury after tomorrow’s home game with Huddersfield Town was postponed due to the Terriers’ continued involvement in the FA Cup.

And he is eager to get back on track against Boro after the recent return of one point from nine knocked the Clarets’ FA Cup hopes: “It’s a good chance to get out in front of our own fans and prove that we still deserve to be up there.

“We had a good run a couple of games ago and we have come off it a little bit, we all know that.

“But Tuesday is a good chance to get back on it.”

Keith Treacy was pencilled in to feature as well to get some much-needed game time, but was allowed a couple of days off to spend with family back in Ireland.

However, Dyche was able to hand Martin Paterson, Brian Stock, Marvin Bartley and Dane Richards a run out, along with Brian Jensen, Luke O’Neill, Alex Coleman, Kevin Long, Joseph Mills and Cameron Howison.

In opposition, Stoke fielded a frontline boasting Michael Owen and Mamady Sidibe, as well as wide men Jermaine Pennant and USA international Brek Shea, as well as midfielders Charlie Adam, Dean Whitehead and Wilson Palacios and keeper Thomas Sorensen.

Burnley started the better with Paterson, Vokes and Richards all going close before the Clarets went ahead.

Paterson and O’Neill pressured Owen into a mistake, and the former Stoke striker picked out Vokes to finish from 12 yards out.

Vokes then added a second from Richards’ corner to put the Clarets in command.

However, Stoke recovered to end the half on the top, forcing Jensen into two good stops.

The Potters started the second half as they ended the first, and they halved the deficit with Shea headed in from a corner.

Adam twice came close to equalising, but Burnley held firm and could have added to their lead.

Mills had two passable opportunities having surged forward from left back, but he was unable to take advantage.

And Richards could only loft his effort over after being teed up by Paterson’s pull back.
