Quiet night for Pope as England ease to victory against Wales

Pope started under the arch fir the first time for his country, as he earned his third cap for the Three Lions, and he showed clean hands throughout, making a good stop from Kieffer Moore in the first half.

But he was not really tested by Ryan Giggs’ side, as he looked to stake his claim for the number one jersey, ahead of the Nations League games with Belgium and Denmark, also at Wembley, on Sunday and Wednesday.

While Pope was the one Burnley player on senior England duty, three former Clarets joined him in the starting line up.

Kieran Trippier captained the side, while Michael Keane and Danny Ings also got the nod, with Ings scoring his first goal for his country with a spectacular overhead kick to make it 3-0.

Harvey Barnes of Leicester City came off the bench to make his England debut - Barnes is son of former Clarets striker Paul, and was born in Burnley in December 1997, a month before his father joined Huddersfield Town, in a swap deal which brought Padiham Predator Andy Payton to Turf Moor.

Elsewhere, Bailey Peacock-Farrell impressed in Northern Ireland’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final in Bosnia-Herzegovina, while Robbie Brady came on after an hour of the Republic of Ireland’s tie in Slovakia, with Kevin Long on the bench. Both times went to extra time.
