PLAYER RATINGS: Newcastle United 1 Burnley 0
The Magpies, now in the hands of former Clarets boss Eddie Howe, collected their first success of the season, as well as their first Premier League clean sheet of the campaign.
The breakthrough came five minutes before the break when Nick Pope spilled Joe Willock's delivery following a collision with Fabian Schar.
Callum Wilson was the grateful recipient of the mishap as the striker lifted the ball into the roof of the net, despite the best efforts of Chris Wood on the line.
The hosts, who lost Maxwel Cornet to injury just before Wilson's winner, had earlier hit the post through Johann Berg Gudmundsson.
And substitute Jay Rodriguez had a late finish ruled out as the linesman's flag was raised.
Here are the ratings.

5. James Tarkowski 6
Kept Wilson quiet for the first-half-an-hour, but then allowed the striker to stamp his authority on the game. The goal-scorer seemingly ruffled the defender's feathers at times, which played into his hands. Went close with a second half header from Westwood's corner.

6. Johann Berg Gudmundsson 6
A much better showing from the Icelandic winger, particularly in the first half. Had the beating of Lewis and Willock down that right hand side, delivered a teasing cross that McNeil failed to connect with, and struck the outside of the post.

7. Dwight McNeil 6
Looked sharp for the first third of the game and came to life again for the final 10 minutes, delivering ball after ball into the box. Looked after the ball well, without making any real inroads, but attacking threat was diluted due to his defensive responsibilities.

8. Ashley Westwood 5.5
Never really in the game on his return to the side as Burnley's midfield was bypassed. Service into the front two lacked its usual high standard, though he pressed the ball energetically and cleaned up on the edge of his own penalty area.
