Following a sluggish first half performance - where former Clarets loanee David Nugent opened the scoring from the spot - the visitors responded well after the break and claimed a point courtesy of Danny Ings’s equaliser.

The pace and power of the Foxes front line seemingly startled Sean Dyche’s side in the opening 45 minutes, with skipper Jason Shackell and Micheal Duff dropping deep to address the speed and drive of Nugent, Jamie Vardy and Lloyd Dyer which afforded creative players such as Anthony Knockaert, Matty James and Danny Drinkwater the time to compose themselves and pick a pass.

And with the Clarets sitting, it allowed the full-backs to bomb forward in support and Ritchie De Laet did just that when springing past Michael Kightly and Ben Mee and providing the centre, dummied by Vardy and Nugent, for Dyer at the back post but his thumping effort was blocked by man of the match Kieran Trippier.

After Drinkwater and James both had speculative attempts blocked on the edge of the box, Knockaert caressed the ball with his left, once a corner broke for him, and thrashed a volley goalwards, which Tom Heaton claimed at the second attempt.

However, City didn’t need to be reliant on their own craft to break the deadlock. Shackell was the guilty party when his casual pass was cut out by Nugent and Drinkwater profited, slipped in Vardy who span his marker before being bundled over by Mee. Referee Andy D’Urso wasted little time in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Nugent who fired to his right, sending Heaton the wrong way in the 13th minute.

Moments later, the Clarets created their first opening when Ings’s header from Trippier’s inswinging cross brushed the fingertips of Kasper Schmeichel before clipping the post.

The hosts were frustrated not to have doubled their advantage midway through the half when Drinkwater’s excellent reverse pass freed Nugent - who had wriggled goal side of Trippier and Duff - and the striker unselfishly pulled the ball back for strike partner Vardy who pulled his shot agonisingly wide of the post.

The Foxes dominated possession, but rarely troubled Heaton, and in the final moments of the half it was Schmeichel falling at full stretch to his post when Ings’s half-volley from the angle of the area flashed across the goalkeeper and the far post.

But Burnley, reluctant to relinquish their place at the summit, responded spectacularly after the interval and controlled the second half. The Clarets proved better at retaining possession, distributing the ball with more zip, while pressing their opponents with more intensity.

And it took just two minutes of the restart for the away side to level when Trippier’s cross found a route between Morgan and Moore and fell kindly for an unmarked Ings who touched the ball beyond Schmeichel from close range to make it 1-1.

The hosts were shell-shocked and almost gifted the league leaders the initiative when De Laet played a blind ball back with Schmeichel his intended target, but Vokes intercepted, drove in to the area, and failed to beat the keeper who narrowed the angle well and saved with a strong hand.

Once Nugent flicked Dyer’s centre over the bar, the home side made a double change with the goal scorer replaced by Gary Taylor-Fletcher and De Laet withdrawn for Marcin Wasilewski as Nigel Pearson switched to 3-5-2.

After Keith Treacy was introduced at the expense of Kightly, substitute Taylor-Fletcher was foiled by Shackell’s block deep inside the area before Vardy flicked a header wide of the far post after stooping to meet Dyer’s clipped cross from the bye-line.

Jeff Schlupp, who replaced Vardy, went closest for the hosts late on when cutting past Shackell and pulling an effort from 20 yards wide of the post.

The Clarets move on to entertain Blackpool in a Lancashire derby at Turf Moor on Saturday.
