Ben Mee’s second career goal and Danny Ings’s seventh goal of the season had temporarily helped Burnley to 12th in the table.

But Palace responded with two goals from Dwight Gayle and Jason Puncheon to keep the Clarets in 17th ahead of their trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland at the end of the month.

Defender Scott Dann provided the platform for Mee’s second ever goal for the club. The Eagles defender nonchalantly nodded Ings’ blocked shot towards goalkeeper Julian Speroni, but the Argentine was forced to concede a corner as Ashley Barnes applied the pressure.

Kieran Tripper whipped in the resulting set-piece and, with Speroni unable to get a glove to the cross, the matchday programme cover boy headed in to the net to notch his first goal since September 2012 in a 2-2 draw against Millwall at Turf Moor.

Sean Dyche’s side opened up a two-goal cushion in the opening eight minutes of their FA Cup third round replay versus Spurs at White Hart Lane - it took double the amount of time against Palace.

Trippier’s clearance in the 16th minute was competed for by Joel Ward and Scott Arfield but, as the former attempted to shield the ball out of play, the Clarets midfielder stole possession on the touchline and assisted Ings who coolly stroked the ball left-footed past Speroni.

After keeping five clean sheets in their opening 16 Premier League outings, the hosts had failed to prevent the opposition from scoring in seven games in all competitions.

That record was extended in the 28th minute. New boss Alan Pardew made an astute tactical switch in pulling Wilfried Zaha over to the right hand side and the Manchester United loanee obliged.

After darting past Mee and Arfield, the England international sparked panic in the home side’s defence with a delightful centre that was eventually hammered beyond Tom Heaton by Gayle.

The visitors searched for an immediate equaliser and only the anticipation of Trippier prevented Yaya Sanogo netting on his debut after more clever work from Zaha to find a route past Mee. The full back, spotting the danger, raced goal side of the Arsenal forward inside the six-yard box to stick a leg out at the expense of a corner.

Heaton saved low from Dyche’s summer target James McArthur a minute before the interval while Arfield flicked Sanogo’s header wide of the upright in first half stoppage time.

However, similarly to midweek, the Clarets endured a frustrating start to the second period. There seemed minimal danger when Puncheon claimed possession 30 yards out, but the winger was allowed to run with the ball unchallenged before finding the gap between Heaton’s glove and the post.

The Clarets enjoyed the bulk of possession after the leveller and went closest to regaining the lead when Trippier’s diagonal was won by skipper Jason Shackell but McArthur was well positioned on the line to the clear as Michael Keane’s volley beat Speroni.

Palace also had an opportunity to steal maximum points inside the final five minutes, but substitute Glenn Murray hooked an effort against the post with Heaton desperately plunging to his right.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate but in the 88th minute disaster struck. With Trippier tucked in alongside his centre-halves, Puncheon’s lofted pass found Gayle unmarked and the former Peterborough United striker fired low left-footed past Heaton to make it 3-2.
