Tom Heaton brought an end to Southampton’s remarkable penalty record to set the platform for Ashley Barnes’s winner at Turf Moor.

The Clarets stopper plunged to his left in the 61st minute to flick Dusan Tadic’s spot kick around the upright and bring a halt to the club’s run of 29 successful penalties in a row.

In Rickie Lambert’s absence, the mantel was taken on by the £11m summer signing. The Serbian scored from 12 yards in a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates in a Capital One Cup tie in September, but he couldn’t find a way past Heaton.

And the Saints were punished as Barnes tucked neatly inside Fraser Forster’s near post in the 73rd minute to help Sean Dyche’s side out of the Premier League’s bottom three.

Danny Ings had a chance to open the scoring inside the first minute, but from George Boyd’s centre he spurned a glorious opportunity with a free header.

Ings went close again minutes later, flashing a low effort past the post with Forster plunging desperately to his right.

After Ryan Bertrand rifled over the bar from a well worked corner routine, Nathaniel Clyne almost diverted Kieran Trippier’s cross in to his own net when pressurised by Barnes.

Just before the interval Saints substitute James Ward-Prowse - who had earlier replaced Jake Hesketh after the teenager’s Premier League debut was cursed by injury - was thwarted by Heaton.

The second half proved much more entertaining as a contest, despite wind, rain and hail swirling inside the stadium.

Scott Arfield’s header from Boyd’s cross was deflected for a corner by Clyne before Graziano Pelle bellowed in despair once Sadio Mane took Steven Davis’s flick off his foot to scoop over the bar.

Then came the penalty incident. Bertrand forced Boyd to commit and the on loan Chelsea full back was grounded by the winger’s outstretched leg. Tadic went to the goalkeeper’s left and Heaton guessed correctly.

Soon after Tadic drilled an attempt wide of the near post before another striker from the former FC Twente midfielder fell fortuitously in to the path of Pelle who sliced wide.

At the other end Ings was thwarted by Forster from a low, left-footed drive from outside the box but the England Under 21 international’s contribution didn’t end there.

Another tireless display was rewarded when he charged down Clyne’s clearance with the ball falling in to the path of Barnes who coolly slotted past Forster at the near post.

Once Heaton saved Jose Fonte’s header, Ronald Koeman looked to £12m signing Shane Long to salvage something from the fixture. But the Clarets held firm for their fifth clean sheet of the campaign.

Tadic bent a set-piece around the post, Clyne grazed the post with a sublime strike, Long skewed wide and Victor Wanyama powered a header wide as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.
