On Good Friday Sam Vokes snatched a point at Vicarage Road in injury time for Burnley but the reverse happened on Easter Bank Holiday Monday as McGugan sent Lee Grant the wrong way from the spot after Kevin Long had forced Henri Lansbury to ground in the fifth minute of time added on.

It was another heart-breaking finale to a Championship fixture for the Clarets who had taken a 67th minute lead when Junior Stanislas's effort was turned in to his own net by Forest skipper Chris Cohen.

Turf Moor honoured former Clarets goalkeeper Harry Thomson prior to the game.

The hero of the famous European Fairs Cup tie against Napoli, described as “a god in a green jersey” by the Italian press following his exploits in the match, which included saving a penalty, died aged 72.

All four walls of the stadium were united in a one-minute applause for Thomson before kick-off, and they showed appreciation for today's stopper Grant who kept the Clarets in the fixture in the opening 45 minutes with a string of fine saves.

His first call of duty was to tip Billy Sharp's header over the bar as the striker towered over Long to meet Andy Reid's sweeping cross. Burnley boss Sean Dyche opted to match his opposite number's 4-4-2 formation - partnering Vokes with leading scorer Charlie Austin, and it was the latter who had the opportunity to give the hosts the lead as he raced on to Ross Wallace's perfectly weighted pass before slicing his effort wide of the upright.

Ben Mee, returning to the starting XI after serving a suspension for his red card at Ewood, also went close midway through the first half as he powered through a wall of Forest players to connect with Wallace's corner but the ball rolled in to the awaiting arms of Karl Darlow.

Billy Davies's side posed a threat on the flanks with Reid peppering balls in to the Burnley box, but their best chance of the half came when cutting infield from the left as McGugan cleverly turned his marker and fed the ball in to Sharp who forced Grant to plunge to his left and save.

The home support made vociferous appeals for a penalty when Kieran Trippier wriggled past Greg Halford to whip in a cross which saw Gonzalo Jara Reyes push Austin to the floor as the pair challenged for the ball. However, referee Nigel Miller rejected the protests.

The home side's best chance of the half arrived when Mee's penetrative pass in behind Reyes was latched on to by Junior Stanislas but his curling effort was superbly touched around the far post by Darlow.

And as the half closed Grant was the hero again when the Clarets defence failed to learn from recent errors. Troy Deeney was allowed ample time and space to level proceedings at Vicarage Road on Good Friday and in similar fashion McGugan was afforded the same luxury, though Grant produced a magnificent fingertip save to keep the scoreline goalless.

The clash failed to gather momentum after the break, with the tempo interupted by injury to luckless defender Mee who was eventually withdrawn. Joe Mills stepped in at left back - making his first appearance since the 2-2 draw against Birmingham City at St Andrews.

The Reading loanee was heavily involved in the opener as he whipped in a troublesome cross from the left which bounced awkwardly in front of defender Elliott Ward and as Stanislas thumped the ball goalwards it cannoned off the shin of Cohen and in to the net.

Davies was forced to make changes in hope of finding something to keep Forest's play-off charge rolling as Darius Henderson, Simon Cox and Radoslaw Majewski were all introduced to add an attacking threat. The former, who scored a late equaliser for Millwall earlier in the season at Turf Moor, was involved immediately as his clever cross with the outside of his boot swerved beyond the Clarets rearguard and found Henri Lansbury who was denied a clear shot at goal with a spectacular last ditch challenge from Mills.

Henderson's looping header was then turned over the bar by Grant as Forest stepped up their search for a goal. However, as time ticked away, Austin carried the ball upfield though instead of holding play up the striker opted to launch a wayward crossfield pass which gifted Forest possession. From there the visitors pushed forward - Henderson may have obstructed man of the match Jason Shackell in the build up - but Lansbury went down under pressure from Long and Miller pointed to the spot.

McGugan cooly dispatched the resulting spot kick before the match official, who had a questionnable display, blew his whistle to signal full-time.
