The point moved the Clarets level on points with Sunderland ahead of their derby with Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light, though the Black Cats remain out of the drop zone by virtue of goal difference.

Danny Ings should’ve taken his seasonal tally to double figures when edging goal-side of Nabil Bentaleb, once George Boyd had pressurised Vlad Chiriches, but the England Under 21 international failed to find the space either side of Michel Vorm, though the Dutchman spilled the attempt.

Tom Heaton saved comfortably from Nacer Chadli, with the Belgian restricted to a speculative drive from distance, while the winger was denied again by the Clarets stopper as he shaped a low effort towards the corner from the edge of the box.

As the hosts continued to probe for the opener, Kieran Trippier’s set-piece dropped for an unmarked Ashley Barnes at the back post who steered the ball in to the six-yard box only for Sam Vokes’s header to be blocked by a wall of bodies on the line.

While Spurs enjoyed their fair share of possession, the visitors were unable to force an entry in to the Burnley box and that led to Danny Rose blazing over from 20 yards out.

Mauricio Pochettino was unbeaten against Sean Dyche this term, having won the Premier League outing at White Hart Lane and advancing in the FA Cup after a replay, and Ryan Mason, fresh from his England debut in the 1-1 draw against Italy, threatened to extend that sequence when firing in to the ground but missing the target.

Heaton saved from Christian Eriksen once Paulinho and Mason had worked the ball to the Danish international from a corner, while at the other end Boyd drilled wide as Barnes climbed above Kyle Walker to meet Trippier’s diagonal pass to assist the winger.

Ings, who featured for Gareth Southgate’s young Lions against the Czech Republic and Germany last week, hasn’t netted since his diving header against United at Old Trafford in February, and he was only denied by a spectacular save from Vorm as he sprung to his left to palm the striker’s bending effort over the bar.

Spurs were forced in to a change, and a restructure, when Kyle Walker dropped to the turf injured early in the second half and replaced by Ben Davies.

It was at the opposite side though, the away side’s left, where Ings chased a lofted pass to the bye-line and, as he cut across the ball, his centre had to be pushed over by Vorm as it threatened to drop in at the far post.

After Barnes’s snap shot was gathered by Vorm, Pochettino withdrew Chadli and introduced £30m former Roma winger Erik Lamela.

Spurs’ best chance came via Eriksen when he side-stepped Ben Mee, manufactured a clear view of Heaton’s goal, but thumped the resulting effort over the ball right-footed.

Rose fired over again with an ambitious drive once Harry Kane had cut past Mee, while the expressions on the faces of the travelling fans spoke volumes as Paulinho wasted a three-on-two break with an inexplicable attempt.

The Clarets went close again, in fortuitous fashion, as Trippier’s inswinging cross caught Vorm off his line but the ball dropped over the bar.

Pochettino’s final change was to introduce England goalscorer Andros Townsend at the expense of Mason, but it was the hosts who pushed for the winner.

Once Lukas Jutkiewicz had replaced Vokes, Trippier’s throw-in was helped on by Barnes and Boyd guided a header towards the corner. However, with Vorm scrambling desperately, the ball whistled beyond the upright.

The Clarets will now take on Arsenal at Turf Moor, with kick-off at 5-30 p.m. on Saturday.
