Padiham exit FA Vase after extra time

NOT even a dramatic last minute goal from Padiham’s goalkeeper could stop the Storks being dumped out of the FA Vase.

Sean Davis’ (pictured, right) strike did manage to force the game into extra-time, for the second time in four days, but Bacup proved too strong running out 3-1 winners.

As in Saturday’s game Bacup easily had the better of the opening 45 minutes and took the lead through Davey Luker’s penalty on 25 minutes.

Padiham battled hard in the second half to get back in the game and were rewarded when Davis came up for a last ditch corner four minutes into added on time and scooped the ball into the net.

Extra-time was played in a deluge of rain and the deadlock was broken eight minutes into the first when a ball from right to left found Bacup’s Martin Cosgrave who fired past Davis to put the home side ahead.

The Vase tie was decided on 109 minutes when a Bacup free kick on the right was headed down for Hayden Paul James to power in from close range and make it 3-1 in favour of Bacup.

Both sides needed to start the tie with changes to their line-ups as Bacup and Padiham had players unable to make it to the ground for kick-off following a closure on the M60 motorway.

Bacup’s players arrived 20 minutes into the first half with Padiham’s arriving at half-time.

Tomorrow Padiham travel to play Atherton LR in the Vodkat League fixture while Padiham Reserves play Daisy Hill Reserves in a changed league at the Arbories, kick-off 3 p.m.
