Padiham beat Colne to win derby

PADIHAM came out on top in a keenly-contested Lancashire FA Co-operative Challenge Trophy first round tie at the Arbories on Tuesday night.

For 20 minutes the game swung from end to end without any real chances created by either side, until Keiran Fletcher tested Colne keeper Chris Thompson with a shot from the edge of the box.

By now the Storks had started to boss the game, with Dave Sherlock a constant threat to the visiting defence, testing Thompson on a number of occasions, one of which was turned onto the bar.

However, two minutes from the break, Colne’s Ed O’Neill let fly with a superb shot and Sean Davis had to be at his best to tip it onto the bar.

Moments later, Sherlock got the goal his all-round performance deserved when he turned in Neil Stansfield’s cross with the last kick of the half.

After the interval, Padiham had Colne on the back foot for the opening 15 minutes, and only Thompson kept them at bay, making excellent saves from Ted Cockett and Sherlock.

Jason Hart had a good chance to pull the visitors level on 68 minutes, but his shot flew across the face of goal and wide.

Within a minute, Padiham went down the other end, and after Cockett - one of seven former Colne players in the Padiham side - played in Sherlock, the latter placed his shot past Thompson for his second goal of the game.

Dominic Craigtested Davis on 72 minutes, but by now the game was over, with the Storks making a series of substitutions in order to see the tie out and ensure a place in the second round.

Padiham are again at home tomorrow when they take on Bacup Borough at the Arbories in the North West Counties Premier Division, kick-off 3 p.m.

With no Burnley game due to the international break, the club are hoping to attract some Burnley fans wanting their football fix, for this season’s Non-League Day, when Premier League and Championship supporters are asked to support their local club.

FINAL SCORE: Padiham 2, Colne 0
