Gibson has not returned to the club, having been permitted to train with former club Middlesbrough in February, following a flashpoint in training, after he saw Watford fail with three offers to sign the 27-year-old before the transfer deadline,

The £15m joint record signing has started only one Premier League game since joining from Boro two summers ago, and he has been linked with his former club, as well as Nottingham Forest, with Burnley keen on using him as a makeweight for Joe Worrall.

But the Canaries have been working hard on a deal and hope to convince the Clarets to allow him to leave on loan, with a view to a permanent deal if they bounce straight back to the Premier League.

Gibson spoke on BBC Radio Tees earlier this month, saying: “It’s probably no secret that I’ve been wanting to get out and play football and have been itching to do so since I signed for Burnley.

“I’ll just have to see what the next few weeks bring. Obviously I want to play football, that’s clear as day, but for now I just have to sit tight and see what happens.”

He has two years remaining on his Turf Moor deal.
