Gray ended his first Premier League season with nine goals, having been top-scorer in the Championship last year, as well as securing the Player of the Year accolade at the Football League awards and being included in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Just three years ago, he was plying his trade in the National League with Luton Town, before joining Brentford in the Championship.

“I’ve got a lot to work on but I’ve got a good base,” said the forward. “It’s just tuning things up and hopefully I can step on and do a lot better next season as I did when I was in the Championship.

“It’s good I can look back and think I could have scored more and done better. I think that’s a good thing, rather than coming off and thinking I couldn’t have done anymore. I know I could of so I have to take the positives.

“You’ve got to be fitter and stronger. Chances come less so you’ve got to take them more. There’s a lot to it.

“There’s more to come. I’ve got to come back fit and ready again and learn from my mistakes this year and work on what I can do better.”

Meanwhile, Gray was one of four Clarets to be awarded a personalised, engraved case containing a Nike Ordem IV, the official match ball for the 2016/17 season, after the campaign had come to a close, to mark his debut in the top flight.

Gray joined Jeff Hendrick, James Tarkowski and Daniel Agyei in earning the souvenir, a product of the initiative set out by the Premier League Youth Department to celebrate all home-grown first-timers.

It will take pride of place on Gray’s mantelpiece, alongside the matchball he collected after scoring a hat-trick against Sunderland at Turf Moor in December – Burnley’s first in the top flight since Peter Noble in 1975: “It was fantastic,” he said. “It’s another good thing to go on the mantelpiece. Four or five years ago I never thought I’d be playing in the Premier League so it’s a nice reward. It will go next to the hat-trick ball.”
