The Irish centre back came in for Michael Duff, who didn’t travel to Southampton due to “a bit of maintenance” in the words of boss Sean Dyche.

And Long said: “I was delighted to play and get on the scoresheet as well.

“I just have to keep working hard on the training grind and hoping that will be enough to get me in the team.

“When I get my chance hopefully I can do all right.

“It’s been really difficult because Duffo’s come in and formed a really good partnership with Shacks (Jason Shackell).

“I just need to bide my time and keep working hard on the training ground.”

The former Cork defender felt Burnley might have earned a replay at least at Southampton after losing a terrific cup tie by the odd goal in seven: “I thought we started the game quite well, but when they scored the first goal we seemed to step off for some reason. We showed them a bit too much respect.

“But we turned them in the second half and got in their faces and I thought we played really well.

“We were unlucky in the end probably not to get the equaliser.

“We showed them what we were all about, creating chances and we were unlucky in the end.”

He added: “The manager said to just do what we’ve been doing all season.

“We showed them too much respect in the first half but in the second half we started getting in behind and we created a lot more chances that way.

“We gave it a right good go.

“It was a good team performance in the second half.

“We conceded sloppy goals but we scored three good goals, so they’re the positives that we’ll take.”
