The Clarets were well beaten at St James’ Park, as Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson combined to send Newcastle sixth, and Burnley 19th.

Wilson bullied Kevin Long, allowing Saint-Maximin to turn Long and Dale Stephens inside out before beating Nick Pope, who got a hand to the ball but couldn’t prevent it squirming in.

The Clarets offered little response in a dismal first half display, but, after being sent out early by Sean Dyche, they bossed the start of the second half and equalised through Ashley Westwood’s volley.

Newcastle hit back immediately as Saint-Maximin burst past Charlie Taylor and centred low for Wilson to finish, and when Pope brought down substitute Ryan Fraser after a poor touch from James Tarkowski’s back pass, Wilson made it 3-1 from the spot.

A night to forget, and much to ponder for Dyche, and, particularly, chairman Mike Garlick, ahead of the transfer deadline.
