Kightly impressed by character of Clarets

Sean Dyche’s side scored 10 times in the 80th minute or beyond last term as they finished second behind the Foxes in the Championship.

And the 28-year-old insists the outcome at the King Power Stadium, which saw Ross Wallace equalise in the fifth minute of stoppage time, was reflective of the attributes that led to last season’s success.

“That’s what we did last year and that’s what we’ve got to build from,” he said. “We never gave up once last year. Last year we were used to winning most weeks - I think we only lost five games.

“It’s a totally different ball game this year but at the end of the day we’re in the Premier League and that’s where we want to stay. We’ve got to keep going.”

Meanwhile the summer signing, who joined from Stoke City on a permanent basis in June, was happy to take on the responsibility of ending the Clarets’ club record goal drought.

Kightly cancelled out Jeff Schlupp’s opener in the 39th minute to halt Burnley’s meagre spell of 655 minutes without a goal in all competitions.

That sequence stretched four minutes longer than the barren spell under Jimmy Adamson during the 1970/71 campaign when a John Roberts own goal in a 2-1 loss to Arsenal at Turf Moor stopped the rot.

After scoring his first Premier League goal since April 2013, as the Potters lost 3-1 against Aston Villa, he said: “It’s nice to get a goal. It would be nice if I can get a few more. It was a long time but we’ve got to keep believing that we can score goals and pick up wins in this division.

“We showed great character and we deserved the point. Last week (against West Brom) was so disappointing so we came out of the blocks really well. There was a different feel about us today and hopefully we can build from here.

“Last year both sides stormed the league and both deserved to go up. Any point in the Premier League away from home is a good point.”
