'Criminal', 'Baffling' - England U21 fans perplexed by what Aidy Boothroyd asked of Dwight McNeil vs Switzerland
England U21 fans have taken to social media to express their dismay at Burnley’s Dwight McNeil lining up at left wing-back against Switzerland on Thursday afternoon.
The Clarets talent is part of Aidy Boothroyd’s contingent for the U21 European Championships which are currently taking place, but found himself tasked with a somewhat unusual brief.
The 21-year-old was asked to play on the right side of a back five for the Young Lions, forcing him to focus much more on the defensive side of his game than he would ordinarily at club level.
In fact, according to Wyscout, McNeil has never played as a wing-back for Sean Dyche’s men, leaving many spectators more than a little perplexed by Boothroyd’s decision.
