Phil Foden gave the reigning Premier League champions the advantage at the midway point of the first half when beating goalkeeper Nick Pope from the edge of the box.

The 20-year-old picked out the gap between Pope's glove and the upright after collecting Bernardo Silva's pass from the right hand side.

Riyad Mahrez then doubled the advantage just before the break when turning Charlie Taylor inside out, having cushioned Fernandinho's raking pass, before firing across Pope to pick out the far corner.

However, there was still time for the hosts to extend their lead. A VAR check penalised Ben Mee's challenge on Sergio Aguero and referee Andre Marriner pointed to the spot.

With Aguero still nursing his injury, which eventually saw the Argentinian replaced by Gabriel Jesus, the responsibility was left to Mahrez.

The Algerian winger made no mistake from 12 yards out, rolling the ball to his left to convert and net his second goal of the evening.
