Ings rounded Tim Howard to slot in the equaliser in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Everton - his first goal since the last game of last season at Reading.

It was the first scored by a Burnley striker so far this season, as the Clarets took their overall tally to five, leapfrogging Aston Villa, who, with four goals have netted the least in the division so far, ahead of last night’s game with bottom side QPR.

Dyche said: “It was fantastic for Ingsy, a very good finish.

“We know we want to play on the front foot, and we did - Juke (Lukas Jutkiewicz) gets turned and a lovely slide, and a fantastic finish - there was nice clarity to his finish.

“Second half I think he should nick one at the end after he’s gone through, but it just clipped up on him, but he looked nice and sharp.

“He’s growing again, after a soft start to his season in the Premier League, and getting the injury, which I thought weirdly might do him good.

“He looks nice and sharp and he’s got himself on the scoresheet.”

Asked whether he needed that goal, Dyche added: “I think all the strikers need goals, Juke is working hard - he’s trying to get one to land for him. He’s working to get a chance, (Ashley) Barnesey comes on, a bit of rough and tumble, a different way of playing, and Marvin (Sordell) got on the pitch...we have to keep believing it will come.”

Dyche handed Stephen Ward a second league start, and first at left back, for the unfortunate Ben Mee, and he explained his thinking: “The margins are fine between the players, we have to find a way of altering it slightly, It’s not massive changes, to find a way of winning. That’s one change, there may be others.

“We don’t just keep rolling it out, hoping for the best, we try to do organised play, but with that freedom, and it’s just a minor change to see if it affects something to give us that tiny little edge we need.”

Dean Marney sat out a fourth game with a hamstring problem, having been “touch and go”, but it is hoped the midfielder will be fit to return at Arsenal on Saturday.
