Sean Dyche has piloted his side to their best start since 2001/02, and on the back of an impressive 3-0 win over Birmingham City at Turf Moor on Tuesday night, this was another result to make the division sit up and take notice.

Burnley started on the front foot, with Paddy Kenny saving from Arfield, Dean Marney and Vokes before, on 17 minutes, going ahead.

Kieran Trippier’s cross was dummied by Danny Ings, and though Sam Byram blocked Arfield’s initial effort, the Scot spun and beat Kenny at his near post.

Leeds responded well, as Luke Varney forced Tom Heaton into a smart stop.

But four minutes from the break, Michael Kightly crossed for Vokes whose header was saved by Kenny, but the striker reacted first and whipped the rebound across Kenny and in.

On half-time, Aidy White beat Trippier, and, under pressure from Marney, went down in the box.

He looked to have been looking for the penalty, and Lee Probert was unimpressed.

In the second half, Heaton again saved well from El Hadji Diouf, before Leeds substitute Dominic Poleon caught David Jones late, forcing the Clarets midfielder to be stretchered off.

With 13 minutes remaining, sub Matt Smith halved the deficit, heading in Diouf’s free kick, but the Clarets stood strong and ran out worthy winners..
