Charlie Austin and Kieran Trippier enjoyed their first action since returning to training, starting the game after missing the Clarets’ first friendly last Tuesday at Morecambe, with Austin withdrawn at the break.

And Burnley took only five minutes to go in front, as Ross Wallace produced a cross from the right and Ings controlled before finishing well.

The luckless Ben Mee was forced off after a collision with Danny Furlong, and was replaced by Danny Lafferty, before the Clarets almost added to their lead, only for a fine save from Wallace’s shot.

However, they settled for a one-goal lead at the break, with Sean Dyche making four further changes, introducing Alex Cisak, Michael Duff, Keith Treacy and Sam Vokes for Tom Heaton, Jason Shackell, Brian Stock and Austin.

Just before the hour, the Clarets doubled their advantage when Ings drive at the Cork back line and fed Wallace, who slipped a pass through for trialist Scott Arfield to slot home.

Wallace and Trippier made way for George Porter and Luke O’Neill shortly after.

Treacy wasn’t far away with a clever chip, before David Jones replaced Ings with 15 minutes remaining after linking up with the Clarets in Ireland as Burnley run the rule over the former Derby and Wigan man, and vice versa.

Former Cork centre back Kevin Long left to a great round of applause when he was replaced by Alex Coleman with six minutes left, and within a minute Sam Vokes made it 3-0 when scoring with the aid of a deflection.
