Dutch international Van Dijk has been ruled out for a significant portion of the season after a questionable challenege by Everton’s Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby, leaving the Reds short at centre-back.

Indeed, former Liverpool, Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who is now a coach at local side Colne FC, has suggested that the Premier League Champions should target Burnley’s star defender Tarkowski.

“Obviously there was a lot of talk about [James] Tarkowski at Burnley, said Kirkland to Football Fan Cast. “I like him, I think he’s decent."

“You can’t go, ‘well will he do what Van Dijk does?’ Because that’s impossible, nobody does that.”

The Clarets man was the subject of intense transfer speculation during the summer, with West Ham United and Manchester United reportedly falling short of Burnley's £50m valuation.
